Peace Initiative Committee Confirms Death of Member, Calls for Calm After Abeokuta Incident
The Peace Initiative Committee of Ogun Central has confirmed the death of one of its members following a tragic incident in Ake, Abeokuta.
In an official statement, the Committee disclosed that Eluwa Joseph, a dedicated member known for his contributions to community peace efforts, lost his life as a result of the incident. Another member, Bayo Abayomi, sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment under close supervision.
According to preliminary information available to the Committee, including accounts from the injured party, the incident reportedly followed an altercation allegedly involving Ese Musiliu. The Committee emphasized, however, that these details remain subject to ongoing investigation, and no final conclusions have been established.
“The loss of Eluwa Joseph is deeply painful to all of us. He was committed to the ideals of peace and community development, and his absence will be greatly felt,” the statement read.
The Committee urged members of the public and media organizations to exercise restraint and responsibility in reporting the incident, warning that the spread of unverified or misleading information could heighten tensions within the community.
“We call on all stakeholders to remain calm and allow the appropriate authorities to carry out a full, transparent, and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
The Peace Initiative Committee also called on security agencies to ensure that all individuals found responsible are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and unity in Ogun Central, the Committee pledged continued support for the family of the deceased and for Bayo Abayomi as he recovers.

I’ve read this statement carefully, and I have to say this write-up is deeply disappointing. It feels more like an attempt to manage optics than to confront the seriousness of what actually happened.
ReplyDeleteFirst, describing this as a “tragic incident” without clearly addressing the circumstances surrounding it comes across as evasive. A man has lost his life, another is injured, and yet the language used softens what may well have been a preventable and targeted act. That needs to be acknowledged plainly.
You reference “preliminary information” and “alleged involvement" but fail to explain why those details are not being transparently addressed. If there are credible accounts, especially from the injured party, then the public deserves more than vague wording. What exactly happened? What led to this escalation? Avoiding these questions only raises suspicion.
The call for “restraint” and warning against “unverified information” is noted, but it also risks silencing legitimate concern. When communication lacks clarity, people will naturally question what is being withheld. Transparency builds trust but this statement does the opposite.
There is also no meaningful explanation of accountability. Saying that authorities should investigate is expected, but what actions has the committee itself taken internally? What safeguards failed? What responsibility does the committee accept, if any?
At this point, it is difficult not to view this as more than just an unfortunate incident. The gaps, the careful wording, and the lack of direct answers give the impression of a deliberate and coordinated attempt to downplay what happened, particularly to those who were affected.
If the committee truly stands for peace and unity, which I believe they don't, then it must demonstrate that through honesty, not carefully curated statements. The family of Eluwa Joseph and the wider community, deserve a full and transparent account, not ambiguity.
Right now, this response raises more questions than it answers.
